Medical Devices Technology International Ltd (MDTi) has beat off stiff competition to be highly commended in the Best Innovative Product and Best Knowledge Transfer categories of the prestigious ICT Excellence Awards 2009. The growing and successful Wolverhampton based company is supported by MidTECH the West Midlands NHS Innovation Hub and was recognised for its home E-Health LUTS self monitoring system. The judging panel was impressed by the technology which helps men over 40 that are at risk of developing prostate cancer. Working with a team of University Researchers at the Centre for Information, Intelligence and Security Systems (CIISS) in FCET at Staffordshire University, the concept of a self-monitoring system matured and further developed. The project is an excellent example of successful Business-University collaboration and demonstrates the excellent value for money of the Advantage West Midlands Innovation Voucher Scheme, from an SME point of view. The ELUTS system allows men in the convenience of their homes, to automatically record and upload from anywhere their urine flow readings using a patented simple funnel shape device and electronic urodiary. This information is transferred to a secure central management system that enables practitioners to remotely advise, monitor and communicate back the best cause of treatment. The system saves time and money with men being unable to avoid waiting within clinics whilst also removing the embarrassment of so doing. Martin Levermore CEO of MDTi said, "We are enthused and resoundingly happy with these recognitions. Being highly commended signals that there is a real and proactive approach in seeing healthcare and importantly E-health as an important driver to change in technology adoption and implementation. This is a model for diversification for regional companies (both in low and high tech industries) to enter a market that they felt may previously be difficult to enter, maintain and importantly grow employment in the region. Finally, this recognition demonstrates to staff, NHS, and academic partners that external parties do recognise the hard work and social impact of their efforts in stimulating the competitive and enterprise agenda." Mike Musson, ICT Cluster Manager, added: "This year we've seen the highest standard of award entries yet and competition has been incredibly tough. The ongoing judging process has been rigorous and the panel faced a major challenge deciding the final winners. It's fantastic to see the quality and diversity of technology companies the West Midlands region has to offer. The ICT Cluster Excellence Awards were presented at the evening Awards event following the Annual ICT Cluster Conference held at the National Motorcycle Museum on 10 November 2009. |
